Introduction: A Remodel with a Rough Start
This bathroom remodel for the family in Lakeway came with some unique challenges right from the start. When I first met the couple, they were recovering from a difficult experience with a previous contractor who had abandoned the project midway, leaving the bathroom in a disassembled and unusable state.
Initial Assessment: Identifying the Problems
We began with a thorough walk-through to assess what had been completed and what still needed attention.
Unfortunately, we discovered numerous issues that had to be addressed before moving forward. One of the most serious problems involved the plumbing—it had been poorly installed, lacked proper wall supports, and was misaligned. In order to correct this, we had to cut into the slab and reroute many of the drains.
This remodel reminded us of why we love what we do: overcoming challenges, creating beautiful spaces, and building lasting relationships with the homeowners we serve.
Structural Challenges: Leveling the Foundation
One of the biggest challenges of this remodel was correcting the structural inconsistencies from the previous addition. The walls were at varying heights, and the slab itself was uneven and roughly poured. To solve this, we brought in grinders to smooth the surface and used a significant amount of floating to bring the floor to level. This was essential, as the customer wanted to install large-format tiles, which require the subfloor to be within 1/16 of an inch in level for a clean, professional finish.
Design Vision: Bringing the Client’s Ideas to Life
Design-wise, the client had a distinct vision. We installed the tiles partially up the wall and collaborated on a custom layout over the soaker tub area. She had a unique decorative design in mind, and after laying it out together, we framed it with pencil trim to complete the look. The client loved the final result.
Client Experience: A Sweet Ending
Taking over a partially completed project with no clear direction or plans is never easy, but we pride ourselves on rising to the occasion. Despite the initial setbacks, we were able to deliver a finished bathroom that the Black family was thrilled with. In fact, Mrs. Black was so pleased that she baked cookies and brought them to our office as a thank-you—a sweet gesture from wonderful clients.
